Finland’s Olympic ski jump coach sent home over alcohol issue

VAL DI FIEMME, Italy — Finland’s ski jumping head coach Igor Medved has been dismissed from the Winter Olympics due to an alcohol-related incident, officials announced on Thursday.

The Finnish Olympic committee described his actions as a breach of team conduct protocols but did not provide additional specifics.

“Medved returned home today. The situation involves matters concerning alcohol consumption. We take violations of team rules very seriously and acted promptly,” stated Janne Hanninen, head of the Finnish team.

Following his dismissal, Medved expressed regret.

“I made a mistake and I sincerely apologize,” he stated. “I wish to extend my apologies to the entire Finnish team, the athletes, and also to the fans.”
