WASHINGTON — Tre’ Johnson, a former NFL offensive lineman known for his time with Washington, who later became a history teacher in Maryland, passed away on Sunday. He was 54.
In a Facebook announcement, Johnson’s wife, Irene, shared that he died while the family was on a trip.
“With a heavy heart, I announce that my husband, Tre’ Johnson, unexpectedly passed away during a short family getaway,” she wrote. “Our children—Chloe, EJ, EZ, and Eden—along with extended family and friends, are heartbroken and in disbelief.”
A standout at Temple, Johnson was selected 31st overall by Washington in the 1994 draft. He remained with the team until 2000, spent 2001 with Cleveland, and returned for one last season with Washington in 2002. The 6-foot-2, 328-pound guard earned Pro Bowl honors in 1999.
Following his football career, he took on the role of history teacher at Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland. His wife mentioned that recent health challenges necessitated a leave of absence.
