Josh Dix leads Creighton past UConn 2 weeks after mother’s death

STORRS, Conn. — UConn observed a moment of silence for the mother of Creighton’s Josh Dix prior to Wednesday’s Big East matchup. The evening concluded with the Bluejays star receiving embraces and encouragement from fans who traveled from Nebraska to Storrs.

Dix netted 21 points, guiding Creighton to a 91-84 victory over No. 5 UConn, marking the Huskies’ first conference home defeat this season, occurring two weeks after the passing of his mother from colon cancer.

“I truly appreciate this university for honoring my mom,” Dix expressed. “I know she would be really grateful for it. I believe she saw everything.”

In the four games following his mother’s death, Dix has averaged 16 points, five rebounds, and two assists, with Creighton suffering losses in two of those contests. Prior to his mother’s passing, the Bluejays faced a 27-point defeat to the Huskies and entered Wednesday’s game as a 15.5-point underdog.

“That locker room is still healing, and they needed a boost,” stated Creighton coach Greg McDermott, who expressed gratitude to UConn for reaching out after learning about Dix’s loss. “We’ve gone through a lot together; we’ve shed many tears, and the team required something like this. It’s a significant win for us. I don’t think I’ve ever been prouder of this group.”

Dix, who transferred from Iowa and leads Creighton in scoring, has relied on many, including his teammates, during this challenging period.

“I can’t do it alone,” Dix acknowledged. “My family, teammates, and coaches have all stood by me. I make an effort not to be isolated; I prefer to surround myself with those who want to see me succeed.”

“Basketball brings immense joy to many, helping distract from various concerns. It’s either a factor that divides you or brings you closer to your teammates. They’re all by my side. The past couple of weeks have been tough, but they’ve supported me.”

UConn coach Dan Hurley extended his best wishes to the Creighton squad.

“They have faced considerable emotional challenges, not only with Josh but also with Blake [Harper], whose mother passed away from breast cancer in 2023,” Hurley remarked. “I hold a deep respect for Mac, Creighton, and their program.”

During Wednesday’s ceremony, UConn retired the jersey number of former Huskies star Emeka Okafor. The 2004 NCAA champion and National Player of the Year was recognized at halftime, becoming the third UConn men’s basketball player to have his number retired, joining Ray Allen and Richard Hamilton.
