Two Georgia football players charged with speeding at max limits

Georgia linebackers Chris Cole and Darren Ikinnagbon were detained on Wednesday evening for misdemeanors related to speeding and other traffic offenses.

In addition to the speeding charges, Athens-Clarke County police also cited Cole for reckless driving. He was released after posting a $26 bond. Ikinnagbon faced charges for speeding, reckless driving, and following too closely, with a release on a $39 bond.

“We acknowledge the charges and are in the process of gathering more information,” stated UGA deputy athletic director Steven Drummond. “As this is an evolving legal situation, we will refrain from further comment for now.”

Cole, a junior hailing from Salem, Virginia, participated in 13 games with one starting appearance in 2025. He recorded 59 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks. He is anticipated to be a key defender for the Bulldogs in the upcoming season.

Ikinnagbon, a redshirt freshman from Hillside, New Jersey, saw action in five games last season, posting two tackles.

The Bulldogs have faced several traffic-related incidents in recent years.

On November 23, Georgia backup offensive lineman Nyier Daniels and his mother were arrested in Commerce, Georgia, following a traffic incident.

Daniels is confronted with 17 criminal charges, including two felonies, after allegedly attempting to evade police at speeds exceeding 150 mph with his two younger siblings in the car. The redshirt freshman from Newark, New Jersey, faces two felony counts of fleeing or eluding a police officer, as per online court records.

He also faces two misdemeanor counts for second-degree cruelty to children and has pleaded not guilty to the allegations.

His mother, Brandi Canada-Green, is charged with a felony count for fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement, along with other traffic-related misdemeanors.

Following the incident, Georgia coach Kirby Smart made the decision to dismiss Daniels from the team the day after his arrest.
