MILAN — Sidney Crosby will not participate in Canada’s semifinal match against Finland on Friday.
Sources indicate that Crosby is still optimistic about returning for the gold medal game, should Canada proceed, although his availability remains uncertain.
The forward underwent an MRI for a lower-body injury he acquired during Wednesday’s intense 4-3 overtime victory over Czechia, where he left the game in the second period. According to sources, the results of the imaging weren’t the worst possible outcome for Crosby, with coach Jon Cooper stating, “We’ve got the best of the best looking at him,” and that the team would evaluate the situation day by day.
At 38 years old, Crosby did not skate with the team during the optional practice on Thursday. Canada also held a closed morning skate on Friday. ESPN sources reported seeing Crosby in a walking boot at the hotel on Friday.
“We’re not going to put anyone in harm’s way,” Cooper mentioned on Thursday. “But if [Crosby] is able to play, he will certainly do so.”
Connor McDavid will take on the role of captain for Canada against Finland. According to international rules, each team must have a player designated with a “C” in their lineup.
“He’s Sidney Crosby,” McDavid remarked on Thursday. “His influence is significant, whether he’s in the lineup or not; that’s just the impact he has.”
