Lindsey Vonn underwent yet another surgery on her severely injured left leg on Friday and continues to be hospitalized nearly two weeks following her harrowing crash during the Olympic downhill event.
The 41-year-old Vonn returned to the United States last weekend after a week of treatment for a complicated tibia fracture, which involved at least four surgeries in an Italian hospital.
“Made it through surgery,” Vonn shared in her latest Instagram update. “It took a little over six hours to finish. As you can see, it required numerous plates and screws to put it back together.”
“Given the severity of the injury, I’ve been facing some challenges post-operation and haven’t been able to leave the hospital just yet,” Vonn mentioned. “Almost there. Baby steps.”
She also posted on X alongside an X-ray image revealing the metal screws and other hardware within her leg: “I’m officially bionic now.”
Vonn was competing for a medal at the Milan Cortina Games while dealing with a torn ACL in her left knee and a partial titanium replacement in her right knee. but, she became entangled with a gate just 13 seconds into her run, leading to a spinning, airborne crash that resulted in her tumbling down the mountain in Cortina d’Ampezzo.
The fact that her skis did not detach during the crash has raised significant safety concerns within the skiing community.
