Netflix Buys Diego Luna's Cannes Film 'Ashes' in Latin America

Netflix has bought Diego Luna‘s “Ashes” for Latin America, Spain and Portugal in the run up to its world premiere in the Special Screenings section at the Cannes Film Festival.

Adapted from the acclaimed novel “Ceniza en la boca,” “Ashes” follows Lucila, a young woman who leaves Mexico with her younger brother to reunite with their mother in Madrid after she emigrated years earlier in search of a better future. But upon arriving in Spain, Lucila is confronted with a harsh and suffocating reality far removed from the life she had imagined. although the disappointment, she remains determined to carve out a future for herself and her brother. Netflix will stream the film in Spanish-speaking territories, including Latin America, Spain and Portugal, in 2027 following its theatrical run.

Repped internationally by Luxbox, the film boasts an ensemble cast led by Luisa Huertas, Guillermo Rios, Sergio Bautista, Benny Emmanuel, Teresa Lozano and Adriana Jacomé, alongside Diaz and Paz.

Luna previously said the film “is the result of a creative journey of independence and great freedom.”

“Ashes” was penned by Abia Castillo, Diego Rabasa and Luna. Damián García serves as director of photography, while Hania Robledo Richards and Asier Musitu are the art directors.

The creative team also includes editor Sofi Escudé, costume designer Gabriela Fernández, casting directors Luis Rosales and Mireia Juárez, sound designer Miguel Hernández Montero and composer Raquel García-Tomás.

“Ashes” is produced by La Corriente del Golfo, Animal de Luz Films, Inicia Films and Perro Azul. Producers are Inna Payán, Valérie Delpierre, Luis Salinas, Diego Rabasa and Luna.

Luna, who has built an international career as an actor, director and producer across film, television and theater, made his directorial debut with the documentary “J.C. Chávez,” which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2007. His first narrative feature, “Abel,” screened in Cannes’ official selection in 2010 and won the Horizontes Latinos prize at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. He later directed “César Chávez,” which premiered at SXSW and screened at the Berlin International Film Festival, as well as “Mr. Pig,” which premiered at Sundance and won at the Dallas International Film Festival.
