Sources: Packers working on extensions for Matt LaFleur, Brian Gutekunst

The Green Bay Packers are making efforts to re-sign coach Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst, both of whom are entering the final year of their current contracts. According to league sources, contract extensions for both are anticipated.

The team will continue discussions with LaFleur and Gutekunst over the weekend, aiming for a favorable resolution that appears to be the likely outcome, sources report.

ESPN sources express surprise if the Packers fail to finalize extensions with both LaFleur and Gutekunst.

Packers president Ed Policy, alongside LaFleur and Gutekunst, met Thursday night at the American Club in Kohler, Wisconsin, where they discussed future plans and are all eager to keep their partnership intact.

In June, Policy mentioned he would prefer not to have a lame-duck coach. LaFleur, when asked last weekend, did not confirm whether he would coach the final year of his contract without an extension.

During LaFleur’s tenure, the Packers have achieved a record of 76-40-1 in the regular season and have made the playoffs six times in seven seasons. yet, they have not made it to the Super Bowl and have not reached a conference championship game since the 2020 season, which was part of back-to-back appearances in LaFleur’s first two years.

Gutekunst has been with the Packers since 1999 and has served as general manager since 2018. He appointed LaFleur prior to the 2019 season and has executed several key organizational moves, including drafting quarterback Jordan Love in 2020, trading franchise legend Aaron Rodgers in 2023, and acquiring Micah Parsons in a significant trade with the Dallas Cowboys last summer.

The Packers’ season concluded disappointingly last Saturday when they let an 18-point lead slip away, resulting in a 31-27 loss to the Chicago Bears in the NFC wild-card round. After the season-ending defeat, multiple notable Packers players, including Parsons, publicly supported LaFleur.
