Sources: White Sox, RHP Seranthony Dominguez agree to $20M deal

Right-handed reliever Seranthony Domínguez has reached a two-year, $20 million agreement with the Chicago White Sox, complete with a mutual option, as reported by sources to ESPN. This move adds another experienced player to a White Sox team that has been notably active this offseason.

The agreement, which is pending a physical examination, positions Domínguez at the end of a youthful White Sox bullpen, marking the third multiyear contract that Chicago has signed this winter. Alongside him, Japanese sensation Munetaka Murakami and left-hander Anthony Kay also received two-year contracts.

With the addition of free agent left-hander Sean Newcomb and the trade involving Luis Robert Jr. that brought in Luisangel Acuna, the White Sox are assembling their strongest roster in years as they seek to rebound from the record-breaking 121-loss season in 2024 and head toward contention.

Domínguez adds much-needed reliability to the late innings, a role he has fulfilled since starting his career with Philadelphia in 2018. Possessing some of the best raw talent in baseball—each of his five pitches is above average, and he regularly throws his fastball at 98 mph—he will begin the season as the White Sox’s closer, teamming up with young, hard-throwing right-handers Grant Taylor and Jordan Leasure to create a formidable bullpen.

but, consistent strike-throwing has been a challenge for Domínguez. If he can improve in this area, the White Sox will either gain a cost-effective closer or a valuable trade asset by the July deadline. After moving from Baltimore to Toronto at last year’s deadline, he enjoyed what many consider his best season, pitching a career-high 62⅔ innings and recording 79 strikeouts against 36 walks, while allowing just five home runs.

Domínguez emerged as the top relief pitcher still available after an early wave of closers hit free agency and leveraged the scarcity of closer-caliber arms into a multiyear deal that includes incentives that could elevate his total guarantee to $22 million, according to sources. It’s highly unlikely the mutual option will be exercised, irrespective of where Domínguez lands.
