Sources: Steelers planning to hire Mike McCarthy as head coach

The Pittsburgh Steelers are set to appoint Mike McCarthy as their new head coach, according to sources who spoke to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

McCarthy served five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, but after failing to finalize a contract extension following the 2024 season, the Cowboys opted to hire Brian Schottenheimer.

In Dallas, McCarthy recorded a 49-35 regular-season record but had a disappointing 1-3 postseason performance. From 2006 to 2018, he clinched six NFC North titles with the Green Bay Packers.

Replacing Mike Tomlin, who recently left the role after 19 years with the Steelers, McCarthy, 62, brings a wealth of experience to the franchise.

McCarthy led the Packers to a championship in the 2010-11 season, defeating the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV. He aims to replicate that success in Pittsburgh, which last celebrated a Lombardi Trophy in 2008 under Tomlin’s leadership.

Over 18 years as an NFL head coach, McCarthy has guided teams to the playoffs in 12 seasons, achieving an 11-11 record in the postseason and securing eight division titles. His 174 career wins place him 13th in NFL history.

Interestingly, McCarthy’s former quarterback in Green Bay, Aaron Rodgers, spent the previous season with the Steelers, though Rodgers’ future in Pittsburgh remains uncertain.
