76ers’ George banned 25 games for taking ‘improper medication’

Paul George has been handed a 25-game suspension without pay for breaching the NBA’s anti-drug policy, the league confirmed on Saturday.

In a statement to ESPN’s Shams Charania, George stated, “Over the past few years, I’ve emphasized the importance of mental health. Recently, while seeking treatment for a personal issue, I regrettably took an improper medication. I take full responsibility for my actions and offer my sincerest apologies to the Sixers organization, my teammates, and the fans in Philadelphia for the poor choices I’ve made during this time.”

“I am committed to using this time to ensure that my mind and body are in optimal condition to support the team upon my return.”

George’s suspension commenced with Saturday night’s matchup in Philadelphia against the New Orleans Pelicans. He will be eligible to return on March 25 at home against the Chicago Bulls, with only 10 regular-season games left for the 76ers.

The suspension will lead to a loss of approximately $11.7 million from George’s $51.7 million salary, translating to roughly $469,691.72 per each of the 25 games he will miss.

Prior to Saturday’s game, Sixers coach Nick Nurse refrained from discussing the specifics of his conversation with George following the suspension announcement. Nurse remarked that he hadn’t observed any personal issues affecting George.

“I think he’s been doing well,” Nurse said. “Very enjoyable to coach. A great teammate who is well-liked by his colleagues. Displaying strong leadership.”

At 35 years old, George is averaging 16 points and shooting 38.2% from beyond the arc over 27 games this season. He has contributed to a rejuvenated Philadelphia team that has rebounded from last year’s injury-plagued campaign, currently standing sixth in the Eastern Conference entering Saturday.

George, Joel Embiid, and Tyrese Maxey have shared the court for 365 minutes over 17 games this season, outperforming opponents by more than seven points per 100 possessions.

According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, Philadelphia will save over $5 million in luxury tax payments due to George’s suspension, bringing the team just above $1 million over the threshold and simplifying the process for the 76ers to exit the tax this week without impacting the roster.

After Thursday’s victory against the Sacramento Kings, Embiid commented to reporters, “We have been avoiding the tax for the past few years, so hopefully, we can maintain the same roster. I appreciate all my teammates here. I believe we have a chance.”

“I can’t predict what will happen, but I hope we at least have the opportunity to compete as we have a strong group in this locker room, and the atmosphere is fantastic.”

The 76ers (26-21) hold a record of 16-11 with George on the court and 10-10 in his absence this season.
