SAN FRANCISCO — Matthew Stafford narrowly defeated Drake Maye for the AP NFL Most Valuable Player award on Thursday night, marking the tightest contest since Peyton Manning and Steve McNair shared the honor in 2003.
Stafford garnered 24 out of 50 first-place votes, while Maye followed closely with 23.
Upon accepting his first award, Stafford concluded his speech by expressing his intent to return for the next season.
“I’ll see you guys next year,” Stafford stated. “Hopefully, I won’t be at this event and instead we’ll be gearing up for another game at SoFi.”
