The Milan Cortina Olympics on Wednesday showcased a notable American duo contending for gold in the ice dance free dance, Evan Bates and Madison Chock.
Bates and Chock are already two-time Olympic gold medalists in team events and three-time world champions, but they have yet to secure individual gold. Currently, the duo ranks second in rhythm dance, trailing the French pair of Laurence Beaudry Fournier and Guillaume Cizeron before the free dance segment. Other American competitors still in the mix include Vadym Kolesnik/Emilea Zingas and Anthony Ponomarenko/Christina Carreira.
The women’s snowboard halfpipe qualification also kicks off on Wednesday, featuring Chloe Kim in her Milan Cortina debut. Kim aims for a third consecutive gold medal, following a training injury last month that resulted in a torn labrum in her shoulder. so, she will compete with a brace on her left shoulder, which she humorously remarked has “made my riding better.”
