‘Hard to forgive’ Olympian for cheating, declaration, woman says

The ex-girlfriend of biathlon athlete Sturla Holm Laegreid expressed that it will be “difficult to forgive” him for his infidelity – especially after he publicly acknowledged it following his Olympic medal win on Tuesday.

“Forgiveness is challenging. Even after a heartfelt declaration broadcasted for all to see,” the woman, who preferred to remain anonymous, shared with Norwegian tabloid VG on Wednesday.

Laegreid, a prominent figure in Norway’s biathlon scene, made an unexpected confession after securing third place in the 20-kilometer individual race on Tuesday.

“Six months ago, I met the love of my life—the most beautiful, kindest person in the world. And three months ago, I made the gravest mistake of my life by being unfaithful,” Laegreid told Norwegian broadcaster NRK, visibly emotional.

He mentioned that he informed his partner about the incident a week prior, but she clarified to VG that she is still quite hurt by the entire ordeal.

“I didn’t choose to find myself in this situation, and it pains me to be here,” she said. “We’ve been in touch, and he knows how I feel about this.”

After winning his first individual Olympic medal to accompany his gold in the relay at the Beijing Olympics, Laegreid appeared distraught, shedding tears and embracing friends. During a press conference, he explained his reasons for revealing personal matters during the televised broadcast.

“It was the choice I made. Throughout life, we make various choices, and that’s what shapes our journey,” he stated. “So today, I chose to share my actions with the world, hoping that she might realize how much she truly means to me. Maybe it will resonate; maybe it won’t.”

In response to questions about the woman’s remarks, Laegreid admitted he may have selected an inappropriate moment to discuss personal issues.

“I sincerely regret bringing up this personal matter during what should have been a celebratory day for Norwegian biathlon. I’m not entirely myself today, and my thoughts are clouded,” he said.
