Sony Pictures and Playstation are backing the film, which is slated to release in theaters on Nov. 10, 2027.

Justin Lin, best known for the “Fast & Furious” franchise, is directing “Helldivers.” even if the plot hasn’t been confirmed, the shooter-style video game follows an elite unit of soldiers — known as Helldivers — who battle alien creatures that are threatening to destroy the fictional planet of Super Earth. Sony hasn’t announced who will star in the film alongside Momoa.

This marks the latest big-screen collaboration between Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions following 2022’s video game adaptation “Uncharted.” That film, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, became a box office winner with $407 million globally. On the small screen, Sony and PlayStation have worked together on the Peacock’s series “Twisted Metal” and Emmy-winning show “The Last of Us” for HBO.

A sequel, “Helldivers 2,” launched nearly a decade later in 2024, meaning there’s more Super Earth material to mine if the first movie scores in theaters. Producers on the “Helldivers” film include Hutch Parker, PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash, and Lin through his company Perfect Storm Entertainment.

Momoa recently led the video game adaptation “A Minecraft Movie” with Jack Black, which became a box office juggernaut with more than $950 million globally. The actor, known for his hulking presence, broke out in “Game of Thrones” as Khal Drogo and cemented his stardom in the billion-dollar hit “Aquaman.” In 2026, he’ll appear in DC’s comic book adventure “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” as the intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo, yet another video game adaptation with Paramount and Legendary’s “Street Fighter” as the feral savage known as Blanka, and director Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Three” as swordmaster Duncan Idaho.
