Bills coach Joe Brady adds John Fox as senior assistant

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The new Bills head coach, Joe Brady, has strengthened his staff by bringing on John Fox as a senior assistant coach, who brings NFL head coaching experience. The Bills confirmed Fox’s hiring and additional coaching staff members, bringing the total to 20 assistants, on Friday.

At 71, Fox has been a head coach for the Carolina Panthers (2002-10), Denver Broncos (2011-14), and Chicago Bears (2015-17), achieving two Super Bowl appearances. Before his head coaching tenure, he served as a defensive coordinator and most recently worked as a defensive assistant with the Indianapolis Colts (2022) and Detroit Lions (2023).

“I’m all about full transparency; I would love to have someone with head coaching experience on staff; it’s not an absolute requirement,” Brady stated upon his hiring. “There’s a delicate balance when adding coaches, and I’ve collaborated with individuals who hold firm views on their systems. If I have people with that experience to turn to, that would be beneficial, but they won’t claim to have all the answers. I need someone who can assist me and stimulate discussions. … The compatibility factor is far more critical to me.”

At 36, Brady is the youngest head coach in the NFL and has yet to hold a head coaching position prior to this.

also, he has elevated Bills tight ends coach Rob Boras to running game coordinator/tight ends, following the retirement of offensive line coach Aaron Kromer, who previously managed the team’s running game. Joe Danna, one of the defensive coaching holdovers, has moved up to secondary coach from his previous role as safeties coach.
