ATLANTA — New Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski addressed Baker Mayfield’s recent provocative post on X with professionalism.
At his introductory press conference on Tuesday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Stefanski was questioned about Mayfield’s remarks. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback expressed on Jan. 20 that Stefanski never reached out to him after the Cleveland Browns traded him away “like a piece of garbage.” Mayfield played under Stefanski in Cleveland during 2020 and 2021.
“Baker is someone I hold in high regard as both a player and a person,” Stefanski remarked. “I treasure rivalries in sports, and the Buccaneers vs. Falcons is one with a rich history. I’m thrilled about that, but I won’t delve into specifics beyond my respect for Baker as a player and a person. They are a great team with a standout player.”
Mayfield concluded his post with, “Can’t wait to see you twice a year, Coach.” The Bucs have also recently appointed Zac Robinson as their offensive coordinator, who previously held the same position with the Falcons in 2024 and 2025.
Meanwhile, Stefanski and the Falcons recruited Tommy Rees to succeed Robinson as offensive coordinator. Rees, a former quarterback at Notre Dame, held that role with the Browns last season.
On Tuesday, Stefanski confirmed that Rees, 33, would be the primary play caller. Last season, Stefanski began calling plays but handed the responsibilities over to Rees last November.
“Tommy will be in charge of calling plays,” Stefanski stated. “It’s a setup with which I’m very comfortable. I consider him an excellent football coach. He’s young, but experience isn’t solely about years; he has had remarkable experiences early in his career and someone I trust. We share a common vision of the game, but our differences push each other forward, so Tommy will lead that offensive staff. I’m excited about the talent we’ve already brought into the group, and I have great confidence in Tommy.”
Falcons president of football operations Matt Ryan and Stefanski agreed that they picture a team that emphasizes a strong running game and effective run defense. Stefanski mentioned he has already communicated with All-Pro running back Bijan Robinson, praising him as both a player and a person.
“This is a remarkable individual that everyone has praised, and seeing his character firsthand was enlightening,” Stefanski said about Robinson. “He’s an intelligent player with endless potential, and it’s our role as coaches to ensure he gets the ball in his hands.”
Stefanski expressed his enthusiasm for player development, particularly looking forward to working with quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who is recovering from left ACL surgery. Stefanski noted that Penix is taking a proactive approach to his rehabilitation.
“He’s a player who showcases an ability to navigate progressions, layer the ball, and cover all areas of the field,” said Stefanski. “He had a very productive college career and has demonstrated remarkable moments in the pros. I see a young player who will keep developing and improving.”
