MILAN — Pierre Crinon of France, who squared off against Canada’s Tom Wilson at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, received a suspension from the French ice hockey federation on Monday.
Crinon will miss the qualification round against Germany on Tuesday, as the federation stated that his conduct following the altercation was contrary to its values. He will also be sidelined if France makes an unexpected progress.
The fight occurred with seven minutes remaining in Canada’s 10-2 victory over France on Sunday. Unlike the NHL’s 5-minute major penalty for fighting, the International Ice Hockey Federation rules classify fighting as a game misconduct, resulting in both Wilson and Crinon being ejected from the match.
The IIHF did not impose any further sanctions on either player beyond their initial ejection.
The altercation began when Wilson confronted Crinon after the latter delivered a left forearm to the jaw of Canada teammate Nathan MacKinnon, leading to a penalty for Crinon.
Canada’s next game is on Wednesday, where they will face either Czechia or Denmark in the quarterfinals.
