Jaxon Smith-Njigba: Believe I deserve to be highest-paid WR

SEATTLE — Jaxon Smith-Njigba mentioned he isn’t particularly anxious about securing a new contract with the Super Bowl LX champion Seattle Seahawks. yet, when the time comes, the 2025 AP Offensive Player of the Year asserts that he should be recognized as the league’s highest-paid wide receiver.

This would entail an extension exceeding a $40 million average in new money.

“I’m not in a rush to finalize it right now,” Smith-Njigba stated in a recent interview with WFAA in Dallas, his hometown. “I know my moment will arrive, and when we finalize it, it’ll be a fantastic deal. God’s timing is flawless, so when it does happen, we’ll be ready. I believe I deserve to be the top earner in my position because of my contributions to the game and the community. I give it my all, and I think that’s worth a lot more.”

The Seahawks aim to negotiate new contracts this offseason for both Smith-Njigba and Pro Bowl cornerback Devon Witherspoon, who were first-round selections in 2023. Seattle can activate a fifth-year option on both contracts by May 1.

Smith-Njigba becomes eligible for an extension following the best season of his career. He set a franchise record and topped the NFL with 1,793 receiving yards, despite Seattle’s league-high rushing rate. Smith-Njigba recorded 10 touchdowns and made his second consecutive Pro Bowl before amassing 199 yards and two touchdowns in three playoff games, aiding the Seahawks in securing their second Lombardi Trophy.

Ja’Marr Chase of the Cincinnati Bengals currently holds the title of the league’s highest-paid receiver with an average annual salary of $40.25 million following his four-year, $161 million extension signed last March. Minnesota Vikings’ Justin Jefferson follows in second place, earning $35 million per year.

Excluding a potential option year in 2027, Smith-Njigba has one season left on his four-year, $14.4 million rookie deal.

“I’d play this game for free,” Smith-Njigba remarked. “My passion for this game is immense. yet, that’s not necessary, and I’m learning to be a savvy businessman; at the end of the day, we need that paycheck.”
