NBA All-Star Game rosters revealed; Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard added

Stephen Curry will reunite with Olympic teammates LeBron James and Kevin Durant at the NBA All-Star Game once more.

The league revealed the rosters for this season’s midseason event on Tuesday night, dividing 25 players into three teams. This year’s format marks a fresh approach—U.S. vs. World—scheduled for Feb. 15 at the LA Clippers’ venue in Inglewood, California.

This idea, championed by commissioner Adam Silver, aims to ignite national pride among players and arrives at a timely moment. NBC will broadcast the game, coinciding with the Milan Cortina Olympics starting later this week and continuing through Feb. 22.

The U.S.-vs.-World matchup has been discussed for years before being implemented this season. The NBA and the National Basketball Players Association rolled out this eagerly anticipated framework in a bid to revive enthusiasm after last season’s criticized tournament format.

Kawhi Leonard of the Clippers, arguably the most notable player omitted from the initial 24 All-Stars, was added to the U.S. player pool just before the rosters were announced. This likely influenced New York’s Karl-Anthony Towns’ placement on the World team.

Towns, who was born in New Jersey, has represented the Dominican Republic in international basketball, honoring his late mother’s heritage.

The NBA has stated that it will adapt roster sizes as necessary to maintain a minimum of eight players on each team under the new structure. Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo is not anticipated to participate for the World team due to injury, leaving that squad with nine players.

The U.S. teams were categorized by age: older players are on USA Stripes, coached by Mitch Johnson of San Antonio, while the younger players are on USA Stars, led by J.B. Bickerstaff of Detroit. Darko Rajakovic from Toronto was appointed as the coach for the World team earlier on Tuesday.
