SAN JOSE, Calif. — With only four days remaining until Super Bowl LX, both Seattle Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald and quarterback Sam Darnold appear unfazed by Darnold’s oblique injury.
“I feel really good,” Darnold remarked on Wednesday. “The time off has definitely helped a bit. I’ll continue to take it one step at a time, focusing on my rehab to ensure I’m ready for practice and the game … on Sunday.”
Macdonald noted that his quarterback is “in a great spot” and making daily progress.
Darnold’s availability for the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots has never been in question. He played through his left oblique injury during both of Seattle’s playoff games and successfully threw three touchdown passes during the NFC Championship Game victory against the Los Angeles Rams on Jan. 25. Initially, he did not receive a game designation when both teams were required to submit their reports last Friday.
yet, uncertainty remains regarding how much practice Darnold will participate in throughout the week. The Seahawks have categorized him as a limited participant in all seven injury reports released since his oblique injury on Jan. 15. Following Darnold’s performance against the Rams, Macdonald indicated that his quarterback had “barely” practiced that week.
The Seahawks arrived in the Bay Area on Sunday evening and held workouts on Monday, followed by a day off on Tuesday, as Macdonald aimed to maintain a normal weekly routine. The team is set to practice this week at San Jose State University.
“We’ll see today,” Macdonald said on Wednesday regarding Darnold’s practice participation. “His workload is definitely increasing each day, with some days being heavier than others. He’s in a great spot and really confident. We’ll see how today unfolds, but I can’t specify right now how many throws he’ll get or what percentage of throws.”
Later on Wednesday, both teams are expected to release their first injury report of the week.
