Slovak fugitive caught when he tried to watch Olympic hockey

ROME — A Slovak fugitive who evaded capture for 16 years was apprehended after appearing in Milan to support his national ice hockey team during the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, police reported on Friday.

The 44-year-old individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, was sought by Italian authorities for a series of thefts that occurred in 2010.

Italian military police, known as carabinieri, located and arrested the man on Wednesday after he registered at a campsite on the outskirts of Milan, following an automatic notification from the campsite’s reception.

The fugitive was transferred to Milan’s San Vittore prison to serve a sentence of 11 months and 7 days, according to the carabinieri.

Unfortunately, he missed the opening match where Slovakia’s hockey team triumphed over Finland 4-1 at Milan’s Santagiulia Arena on Wednesday.
