Sources: Giants hire Brian Callahan to John Harbaugh’s staff

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants are set to bring on former Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan as their quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, sources have confirmed to ESPN.

Callahan, 41, was also a candidate for the offensive coordinator position with the Giants, which ultimately went to former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator and Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy.

This hiring adds a deep pool of experience to John Harbaugh’s new offensive staff, which includes two former NFL head coaches—Nagy and Callahan—alongside former college head coach Mike Bloomgren as offensive line coach, and two other ex-offensive coordinators: senior offensive assistant Greg Roman and tight ends coach Tim Kelly.

Callahan was let go by the Titans in mid-October. He transitions from coaching last year’s first overall pick, Cam Ward, to working with the second quarterback selected in this year’s draft, Jaxson Dart. especially, former Giants head coach Brian Daboll is now the offensive coordinator for Ward in Tennessee.

Prior to his stint with the Titans, Callahan had a robust track record with quarterbacks, having served as Matthew Stafford’s coach with the Detroit Lions for two years, spent a year with Derek Carr at the Las Vegas Raiders, and spent four seasons as the offensive coordinator for Joe Burrow at the Cincinnati Bengals.

Together, Callahan, Nagy, and Roman have experience coaching elite talents like Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Burrow, and Justin Herbert in recent years.

During his tenure with the Titans, Callahan posted a 4-19 record as head coach, including a 1-5 mark this past season with Ward. The team’s offense managed only 83 points through the first six games, the franchise’s lowest total since 1985, according to ESPN Research.

The frustration peaked in Week 3 at Nissan Stadium when the Titans suffered a 41-20 defeat to the Indianapolis Colts. Fans expressed their discontent, calling for Callahan’s firing as they left the field at halftime.

Before his firing, Callahan delegated playcalling responsibilities to quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree and was not the primary playcaller in Cincinnati either.

Now, he returns to focusing on quarterback coaching. Currently, the Giants’ quarterbacks room features Dart and veteran Jameis Winston, with Russell Wilson poised to enter free agency.

In addition to coaching quarterbacks, Callahan will oversee the Giants’ passing game. Roman is also expected to play a key role in shaping the run game within Nagy’s offensive framework in New York. This strategy is all part of Harbaugh’s efforts to create a robust support system for Dart in his second professional season.
