“The View” hosts reacted on Friday morning to the recent firing of Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, who was dismissed by President Donald Trump following several controversies.
“This is a woman who, I think, has 100 reasons to get rid of her. Her department, under her leadership, has killed, injured and detained U.S. citizens,” Ana Navarro said of Noem. “She has detained almost 4,000 children in a detention center. There’s a lack of morale.”
Sunny Hostin chimed in, saying, “I’m never happy when someone loses their job or loses their career, but this could not have happened to a better person, right? I mean, she needed to go. She needed to go.”
In addition to addressing the recent actions of ICE under Noem’s leadership, the talk-show hosts also pointed out the $220 million ad campaign she filmed in front of Mount Rushmore. “Some of these shoots were happening while the government shutdown was going on,” Navarro said. “So while the TSA agents who work under her department weren’t getting paid, she was going through these glamour shots at Mount Rushmore.”
Hostin did raise her concerns, though, that Noem’s policies “may still stand.” She added, “We know now that ICE has killed American citizens. We know that they are detaining people that are — as you’ve pointed out, Sarah [Haines] — are appropriately going through the immigration process. We also know that there are masked men just grabbing people of the street and disappearing them from their families, separating their families, using children as bait to get their fathers and their mothers out of their homes. We know that their training has been cut by, I think, cut in half. So yes, she needed to go, but there is a lot of work that needs to be done.”
The hosts also questioned Noem’s successor. On Thursday, Trump announced that Noem would be replaced by Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma, a former MMA professional fighter who has been vocal about certain stances on immigration.
“Last year, he said that babies born in the United States to immigrants living in the country illegally should be deported alongside their parents if the adults are removed,” Joy Behar said, to which Hostin added, “Which is unconstitutional, because that goes to the very heart of birthright citizenship, which is in the Constitution.”
After some further debate, the discussion ultimately steered back to Noem, with Navarro quipping, “Bye, Felicia — don’t let the door hit you where the good Lord split you.”
