Thomas Frank sacked by Tottenham after dismal Premier League run

Thomas Frank has been dismissed as Tottenham Hotspur’s head coach, the club announced on Wednesday.

He departed from his role after eight months, with Spurs currently sitting 16th in the Premier League following a 2-1 home loss to Newcastle United on Tuesday.

Frank, 52, was met with chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” from the Spurs supporters, who also echoed the name of former manager Mauricio Pochettino as the team suffered their 11th league defeat of the season.

“The club has decided to make a change in the Men’s Head Coach position and Thomas Frank will leave today,” the club stated.

“Thomas was appointed in June 2025, and we aimed to provide him with the time and support needed to build for the future together.

“yet, results and performances led the board to determine that a change was essential at this point in the season.

“Throughout his tenure at the club, Thomas has conducted himself with unwavering dedication, striving to advance the club’s interests. We thank him for his contributions and wish him success in his future endeavors.”

Sources informed ESPN that the club has yet to finalize a replacement plan, though an interim appointment appears more likely at this early stage. Chief executive Vinai Venkatesham is anticipated to release a longer statement later on Wednesday.

According to sources, Venkatesham recommended the change to ownership Tuesday evening after the match as Tottenham’s disappointing performance continued, leading to another tense atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Spurs have managed only two victories in their last 17 league games, accumulating just 11 points during this stretch, with their current winless run of eight matches being the longest in the Premier League since October 2008.

Sources indicated that Spurs were hesitant to make a change, acknowledging that several problems at the club predated Frank’s appointment and that he has faced an unfortunate amount of injuries.

Last season, under Ange Postecoglou, Spurs finished 17th in the league but secured their first trophy in 17 years, winning the Europa League in May by defeating Manchester United 1-0 in the final.

yet, Frank only experienced a minor initial improvement, narrowly losing the UEFA Super Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain and winning six of the first 16 league matches.

The board felt compelled to intervene as Tottenham is now at risk of relegation, sitting only five points above the drop zone.

Frank guided Spurs to the Champions League round of 16 after finishing fourth in the group stage, but the club’s disappointing results became impossible to overlook.

The team was eliminated in the EFL Cup fourth round by Newcastle and in the FA Cup third round by Aston Villa. They managed only two home league victories all season, and the negative atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium worsened due to off-field issues, with captain Cristian Romero criticizing the club’s management in a social media post shortly after the transfer window closed.

This marks the first sacking in the post-Daniel Levy era at Spurs. Levy left the club in September as the majority owners of Spurs’ holding company Enic, the family of billionaire Joe Lewis, assumed a more prominent role.
