Tim Allen Says No Home Improvement Reboot owing to Actor Sons’ Problems

Tim Allen Says No Home Improvement Reboot Due to Actor Sons' Problems

“Toy Story 5” star Tim Allen says a “Home Improvement” reboot is not likely at the moment due to “personality problems” with the actors who played his on-screen sons on the classic ABC sitcom.

“They keep talking about how it could move forward, but they get stuck [because] there are some personality problems right now with the boys,” Allen told US Weekly in an interview published Wednesday.

“Home Improvement,” which ran for eight seasons from 1991 to 1999, starred Allen as Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor. The show followed Tim’s career as a home improvement TV personality and his home life with wife Jill (Patricia Richardson) and their three sons: Brad (Zachery Ty Bryan), Randy (Jonathan Taylor Thomas) and Mark (Taran Noah Smith).

Bryan, who was 9 years old when “Home Improvement” started and 17 when it was concluded, has been arrested multiple times, the most recent being a second-degree domestic violence charge in 2025. In February 2021, he was charged with felony assault, third-degree robbery and assault in Oregon. He had been arrested for allegedly strangling his then-girlfriend, Johnny Faye Cartwright, in 2020.

In addition to Bryan’s multiple arrests, another complication surrounding a potential reboot is the fact that Jonathan Taylor Thomas is no longer “interested in acting,” according to a 2024 podcast interview with Richardson. Thomas has not appeared on screen since a guest role on Allen’s sitcom “Last Man Standing” in 2015, and Smith (who played the youngest son) hasn’t had an acting credit since a voice part on “Batman Beyond” in 1999.

“They’ve got their own issues,” Allen told US Weekly. “I always thought it would be cool if it was a story about them. That’s a little challenging right now, to put it mildly.”
