EXPERT TAKE

ESPN’s Sam Tighe shares insights on Manchester United’s interest in Hayden Hackney and Murillo.

It was only a matter of time before Hackney was linked to Carrick’s Manchester United. The 23-year-old emerged as Middlesbrough’s key midfielder during their collaboration from 2022 to 2025, and Hackney expressed that he was “gutted” when Carrick was dismissed last summer.

Under Carrick’s expert guidance, Hackney established himself as one of the top midfield ball progressors in England’s second tier. He ranks in the 96th percentile for progressive passing and the 99th percentile for progressive carrying across Europe this season. yet, transitioning to Premier League level presents a significant challenge.

Forest’s Murillo is notably more established in this context. A robust center back, he possesses incredible recovery speed and, subtly, a refined long-range passing ability. The Brazil international ranks joint-second for most last-man tackles (5) and has the third-most clearances off the line (4) since the last season began, proving his innate defensive abilities.

yet, concerns about his fitness have surfaced over the past year. even if he hasn’t missed many squads, his availability has often been uncertain.
